Pro-Tip: Change the destiny of “chip crumbs”

It may not look like much, but it'll get the job done.

Let me preface this by saying, I am by no means a culinary expert, that’s my wife’s forte. But despite that, I do occasionally get hungry when she’s not around.  Today, was such an occasion.  Two days from payday, and having a POS car that could be registered with the military as a lethal weapon, prevented me from my normal routine of heading out to the nearest Jack-in-the-box and stocking up on mystery meat tacos (damn, those things are good though!).

Having plenty of things to make an actual meal, all of which were clearly beyond my level (think, PB&J… that’s my “specialty”).  So I settle for the next best thing, a snack.  I go to the refrigerator and grab a jar of salsa, then head to the pantry to grab the bag of chips.  Sadness sets in… the bag is near empty and all that remains are those tiny annoying “chip crumbs” at bottom.

Chip Crumbs

All to many times I’ve found myself tipping the bag over my face, like I’m drinking a movie sized soda without a straw, and crumbs go everywhere.  Or trying to eat the crumbs out of the bottom spilling them all over the place, biting my fingers, or basically just looking like a monkey eating bugs off of their friend’s back (I’m making an assumption that monkeys have friends, I’m no zoologist).  Dejected and destined to remain hungry for an hour or so, I head towards the trash to toss the chips (8,000 tons of chip crumbs are put in our landfills every year*, this wasn’t being responsible).  Then lightning struck!  If because of their size, I can’t get the chips to the salsa… I’ll bring the salsa to the chips!

Here’s how it goes:

  1. Take the chip crumbs, dump them in a bowl.
  2. Sprinkle some cheese on top.
  3. Microwave for about 30 seconds.
  4. Take your dip and pour some on top of the “nacho mix”
  5. Crush the chips with a fork/spoon/spork (I’m going to give you some freedom to express yourself here, utensil to taste)
  6. Mix everything together.
  7. Eat it like a bowl of cereal.
  8. Ta-da. Chips are eaten, you are sated, environment saved. Win-win-win.

What about you? Do you have any “ecologically responsible” (read: really lazy) snacks you like to eat, but are too ashamed to admit?

Let us know in the comments.

*I totally made this up

  1. Hells yes to this. Chip crumbs are pretty much my favorite thing to eat ever, except for the extra smokehouse flavoring at the bottom of a bag of almonds.

Love the cheese idea. I usually just mix in some salsa with my chip crumbs, but any chance I have to add cheese to anything, I will take.

    Well done, sir.
