I think the writers probably just had the Clerks conversation and thought, "That's funny! Let's do it!" then didn't take the time to figure out what the point would be. It's analogy for analogy's sake. Look, Ma, I can draw comparisons! So it turns out to be mildly amusing, half-heartedly poignant, and completely bland. Sorry to be so harsh. It's because I care. 1.
