New Halo: Reach commercial is the Halo live-action film we need

by brodiemashAug 31st, 2010Leave a Comment

Back when Neil Bloomkamp did his series of short films for the Halo series, I was never 100% sold that his vision was a perfect fit for the Halo world. Sure, it would have been cool to see the Halo universe through the director’s eyes (especially after seeing his awesome “District 9″) but somehow I kept thinking that this franchise needed something else. After seeing Noam Murro’s commercial for the impending release of Halo: Reach, the next game in the franchise set to release next month, I’m kinda sold on this guy helming a Halo film, if the powers that be ever agree to move forward with that again. Something about the imagery, the color & texture in this commercial lends itself more to tthe source material more so than Bloomkamp’s sterile, albeit awesome, take with his films. What do you think?

Dem Trailers: Catfish

Whatever you do, don’t talk about this movie. That seems to be the common thread in all stories I’ve read about this film ever since it made a splash at Sundance earlier this year and although this trailer seems to have been out for a while, I barely got to it recently. Not really sure what to think of the film from this trailer but damned if I’m not intrigued by the concept of what happens at the conclusion of the film. So what do you think? Is this an internet hype-machine or an engrossing documentary that will truly blow your socks off?

Oh the good old days of pushing women in bikinis around in a shopping cart filled with beer. I blame Obama for taking all of this away. Or is Glenn Beck to blame? I don’t know but someone must pay! [via Buzzfeed]

Dem Trailers: 127 Hours

It’s just something about trailers that show clips of the director’s previous filmography that bothers me. Sure, Danny Boyle might not be a household name but something about that seems so Mickey Mouse (no offense to Mickey Mouse). But as soon as you pass that intro, you get into the meat of the trailer for Boyle’s next film, which has been getting some pretty positive buzz. I’m kinda rooting for James Franco here as I think he’s got some good acting chops in him and hopefully this could be the film to elevate him to another level. Also, if you haven’t seen Boyle’s “Sunshine” do yourself a favor and see that ASAP! So what do you guys think of the trailer? Leave a comment and let us know!

Tomorrow is the big day for the Dumb Drum Gettogether #6 so in case you were still on the fence, perhaps this cool video we made can convince you to join us! Props to Andrew Toschi for helping out with his mad animation skills.

Like the client told Chow Yun-Fat in “The Killer”: No information, just say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. That video up there is from a police dash cam which caught a high speed accident that would make Michael Bay very proud. If that’s your thing, by all means click that triangle up there and watch. If not, move along and we’ll hopefully get something up on here a little more to your taste :)

Dumb Drum Get-together #6:
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

by brodiemashAug 20th, 2010Comment (1)

It’s been a while since our last Gettogether here on Dumb Drum (we were doing Tweetup’s before Twitter blew up) ever since local theaters stopped doing Flashback Features and it’s made us somewhat sad. Recently, we talked to the general manager at Edwards about this and were told that they’re working on something but that it probably wouldn’t happen any time soon. We were always fans of coming together with like-minded people to have a drink, meet new people and check out an awesome movie and that was the whole point of the Gettogether. And to be honest, we kinda missed that so we thought to ourselves “Why not just bring back the Gettogether for some other cool movies?” And I couldn’t think of a more awesome movie to do it for than “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” so we’re bringing it back next Thursday, August 26th at Edwards Theater in Riverpark! The film begins at 7:45 p.m. (you can buy tickets here on Fandango) but before that, we’re meeting up at the bar area at Me N’ Ed’s Coney Island Grill at 6pm for a few beers so feel free to come and join us, throw back a few and maybe get a bite to eat before the film if you feel so inclined. We’d love to say Dumb Drum would be providing food & drinks but we’re broke and do this for the love so all we can really offer is our handsome faces at this point but hopefully we can provide some stimulating conversation as well and as soon as 7:30 hits, we’ll walk over to the theater and peep out the awesomeness that is Edgar Wright’s newest film. In case you haven’t heard, the film has been getting pretty good reviews from us and even the Fresno Bee’s Rick Bentley and he doesn’t like shit! If you’ve played one game of Street Fighter, are a fan of Edgar Wright films (which you should be) or just wanna see Michael Cera get beat up, there’s a good shot you will enjoy this film and laugh your ass off. If you have any questions, feel free to ask in the comments. Also, feel free to RSVP over here if you’re on Twitter. So spread the word, tell your friends, make it a date night… whatever! Just mark the day on your calendar and we’ll see you next week!

It’s people like this that make me feel worthless. I mean, that’s talent if I’ve ever seen it and I’d go as far out on a limb to say that version of “Protect Ya Neck” is right up there with the original. Yeah, a little bit of hyperbole but what can I say, I get hyped when I hear what this dude does on his… well everything. BONG!

Dem Trailers: Black Swan

by brodiemashAug 18th, 2010Comment (1)

Darren Aronofsky will always have a special place in my heart. “Requiem For A Dream” blew my mind away and I’ve been yearning for a similar high ever since. Will “Black Swan” be another one for the director’s win column? Well, if this trailer is any indication, is sure looks that way and although I’m not 100% sold on Mila Kunis’ acting chops, I’m hoping given the proper direction, the beauty can hold her own weight next to Natalie Portman. And I’m not talking about that controversial sex scene between the two. Although I’m not sure if the score for the trailer was done by Aronofsky staple composer Clint Mansell, it sounds pretty damn good to this guy. So check it out up there (or over here at Apple, if HD is a must) and let us know what you think.

Local film “Finding Hope Now” gets its first trailer

by brodiemashAug 17th, 2010Comments (2)

After shooting all over Fresno last year, local production “Finding Hope Now” has finally dropped its first trailer. Coming in at around the 3 minute mark it does seem a little long for a first trailer, but I have to say the camera work looks pretty good. The film, starring Michael Badalucco (who will always be Papa Mathilda in my book) and a bunch of local actors, still doesn’t seem to have a release date, but hopefully Fresno will get a premiere screening in the near future. We’ll post up any more info as it becomes available, so keep your eye on the blog! You can visit the film’s official site by clicking here.
