Win tickets to The Lord of the Rings in Concert coming to the Save Mart Center on Friday, October 21

by BryanSep 29th, 2011Comments (36)

WINNER HAS BEEN CONTACTED! If you didn’t win, Groupon has tix for 52% off today only. Should be a nerdtastic good time, don’t want to miss it!

Nerds of the Central Valley rejoice! We were blessed last year with Star Wars in Concert and this year on Friday, October 21 at 7:30 p.m. we shall receive another treat… The Lord of the Rings in Concert at the Save Mart Center. This musical extravaganza features all our favorite cues from Howard Shore‘s Academy Award winning score to The Fellowship of the Ring performed live on-stage with over 200 musicians, which includes the Munich Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Chorale, and Phoenix Boys Choir, conducted by Maestro Ludwig Wicki. But not only can we bask in the awesomeness of the LOTR music, we get to watch scenes from the film shown on a huge 60-foot screen in uncompressed HD using two 20K lumen projectors. I think I just heard some nerd’s head explode.

Now I can hear you already… “Hey Dumb Drum guys, how dare you tell us how awesome this event will be and not offer us a chance to win tickets?” Well fortunately for you I have a time machine, heard your complaints in the future, and have come back to indeed offer two tickets to one lucky person to the concert (by the way, would love a Back To The Future in Concert). OK, off topic.

SO HOW DO YOU WIN? Just leave a comment below and make your argument for which Lord of the Rings movie is your favorite? Don’t just give us the title, elaborate! The deadline to enter is Monday, October 17 at 12 Noon. Please use a real email address when you comment, that’s how we’ll contact the winner. Good luck! Read more…

FUSE Fest happening this weekend, rumors indicate awesomeness

Our passion here at Dumb Drum are films but seeing that the very name of this blog is derived from some hip-hop lyrics, we’re also big fans of music. And with that, we’re proud to be sponsoring FUSE Fest 2011 which just so happens to be going down Friday, September 30th and Saturday, October 1st. So this weekend, we’d suggest you head to dangerous beautiful downtown Fresno and take in some locally brewed music as well as perhaps visit some new venues you’ve never patronized in our fair city (go here to see a map of all the venues and their locations around downtown). You can catch the entire line-up and set times over here at The Fresnan and after the jump, peep out the video up there that we did to help promote the event for a little FUSE Fest history & info on the event this weekend. Tickets are $20 for a two-day pass, $15 for a single-day pass and if you’re a Creative Fresno member, your two-day pass will cost you $15 when you buy them at Fulton 55. Quite a deal for all the music you’ll be getting, I might say. And on top of that get a chance to see how lively downtown Fresno can get when people come together to celebrate awesome events like this. Hope to see you all out there this weekend. Read more…

Random Goodness: ‘Insane Office Escape’ is insane

Remember that crazy POV sequence in the teaser trailer for the new Spider-Man reboot? Well this video is just like that… only longer, cooler, and with 100% less computer-generated imagery. Not to mention guns and fist fights. It’s a pretty awesome little sequence directed by Russian musician Ilya Naishuller and actually serves as a music video for his band Biting Elbows. Can you imagine an entire feature-length movie in POV, could you sit through it without hurling? Let us know in the comments.

What the heck are the Frebbys? Psh, that’s easy! Fresno + Webby = Frebby. It’s an annual awards show that honors the best of Fresno’s web scene. It’s all going down tonight at 7 p.m. at Fulton 55 in Downtown Fresno. A couple Dumb Drum staples (Swede Fest and Cross Streets) have been nominated and are among the judge’s Top 20 picks. Will we win the big one (and I mean big one, have you seen the size of this freaking statue)? Well if you have $15 burning a hole in your pocket you can come out and see the best of what’s going on with Fresno’s web scene. More info and tickets at the Frebbys official site.

Dem Trailers: The Raid

(Red Band Trailer is NSFW) I’ve longed for the return of the John Woo days. I mean the GOOD John Woo days, I’m talking about “The Killer,” “Hard Boiled” and “Bullet In The Head” days. I’ve haven’t come to terms with the fact that these type of movies will never exist again and thanks to “The Raid” from director Gareth Evans, my hope may have a stay of execution. Now this not only has the visceral gun play for a Woo film, it also blends with some of the more recent martial arts films from Tony Jaa. Now I hope those are two tastes that taste great together and from the looks of things (and the early reviews), it seems to work very well. I can’t understate how fucking excited I am to see this kind of film returning to us. Also: fuck John Woo. I love you, but I hate you. Check out the trailer and let us know what you think in the comments below.

TONIGHT: Reel Pride kicks off 22 years

The Fresno Reel Pride Film Festival starts tonight at the Tower Theatre and goes until Sunday. It’s the one of the largest and oldest gay and lesbian film festivals in the USA and it’s right here in Fresno. You can view the full schedule here, but tonight at 7:30pm the festival kicks off the indie comedy “Dirty Girl,” which screened at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival. Peep the trailer out above. Tickets are $20.00 and that also gets you into the after party at Tower Lounge. There’s five days of films, so if you can make it out tonight try to see something before Sunday rolls around. Support our local film scene!
