Oh, H.R.! You know you ain't right, right?

Oh, H.R.! You know you ain't right, right?

The inurnetz seem to lit up by the news that Ridley Scott returning to the Alien franchise is major news. Sorry, never seen any of the “good” Alien films as my journey into that universe starte with the third film. But Ridley Scott for me has never been an AMAZING director but he does have a few quality films under his belt. Nothing groundbreaking but entertaining, at least in my book. I could be very wrong but I think everyone’s hype-meter needs to calm the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks down. Why the hell did I even write this post up if I don’t give a fuck, you ask? I didn’t want to keep yesterday’s Tweetup post on top during this otherwise slow news day :) Have a good weekend, folks! Maybe I’ll get around to watching the first two Alien movies tomorrow and see what people are excited about. Are any of you guys excited by this news or am I right?

Reminder: The Great Fresno Tweetup is tonight!

tweetupavatarFor all you Twitter peeps out there, tonight is your opportunity to get out of your dank cave for an evening and face these people whom you’ve got to know so intimately but have never smelled their breath as they spew sounwaves in your general direction. The Fresno Beehive have teamed up with the Fresno Grizzlies for The Great Fresno Tweetup. For all the deets, go here but it involves tweeting or retweeting or something cool like that and you get a ticket for $5 which includes a drink ticket for a $1 beverage and the opportunity to sit in the ultra l33t Tweetup section (which are, more than likely, the same fucking chairs that give you a back ache after the game) We Twits (Twats?) might think we’re above the World Of Warcraft or Second Life or Everquest folk but it’s all a ruse. We’re are one and the same. But fuck it, right?! Lets go get some beers and try our best to convert witty 140 character banter into actual conversations. Team Dumb Drum will be out there in the form of myself & Bryan Harley (I heard the even PartyMarty & Debbie might make an appearance) so if you see us, please feel free to come by and say hello and don’t mind our overpower nerd stank: it’s medical, swear. Oh and in case you wanted to follow us on Twitter and know EXACTLY when Bryan is taking a dump or Debbie is shaking her money maker, you can find us here:

Hey, Wes Anderson! Can I talk to you over here real quick? Coo, coo… Aight, man… I like your movies. Rushmore, fucken Life Aquatic. They were good. Real good! But I have to tell you, this looks kinda wack. I mean your trademark humor & dialogue comes through, no doubt. But the stop motion looks worse than South Park animation and the framing of some of the shots look questionable and lack life. I know you might have been going for the look of your brother’s drawings but it comes of odd in the 2-D plane on film. Look, I hope maybe it was just my slow internet connection that made it look crappy but I’m just giving you a heads up: I might not watch this film if I don’t see some vast improvement. Now go get ‘em, good sir!

This is what I like to call a perpetual motion video: a video that gets funnier every time you watch it. You know what I’m talking about (if you also suffer from severe dumbness)! So I don’t know where this clip is from or what the context is but just know that there is some heavy close up tongue action that might gross you out or turn you on, depending on your cup o’ tea. Oh yeah, also there is evisceration and regurgitation action going on here, making for a classic clip! Please watch this at least three times and let it marinate, much like that creature’s pause at the end. Genius! [via Videogum]

Want to contribute to the next list of Flashback Features?

by brodiemashJul 29th, 2009Comments (17)

edwardsSo Edwards Theater’s series of popular Flashback Features has ended and there was no word of it possibly coming back, until today when local blogger/TV dude Mike Scott posted this little update to the Mindhub listserv:

The manager at Edwards Riverpark wants to know what YOUR favorite classic films are!  Every Thursday night, Edwards has a “Flashback Flicks” night, when they show a classic film on the big screen for only $5.  You’d be amazed at the crowds that turn out for films like “Gladiator” or “Clockwork Orange” or “Grease.” Anyway… Henry (the theater manager) is currently putting together a list of the next group of films he’s going to schedule, but he wants to know – what are some of Fresno’s favorites?

I’ve submitted a few suggestions to Henry.  You can see my list, and submit your own suggestions, by following the link below!

http://community.cbs47.tv/blogs/mikeblog/archive/2009/07/29/4211351.aspx

So there you go. Kinda mad that they didn’t include Desperado last time, like I was? Well here’s a chance to make your voice heard! Hmmm… maybe they can screen some of the films that people have sweded and show those before or after the screening (Bryan, we need to get on this!!). So it sucks that you gotta sign up at the CBS 47 site to comment but feel free to leave us your suggestions here. Sure, they probably won’t get counted but you never know who reads this little blog. And we might have to pay this Henry character a visit. After the break, you’ll find my list of suggestions along with trailers. Read more…

Wanna see quite possibly the coolest parts of G.I. Joe right now?

Stephen Sommers is a hack. I’m sure if you ask him, he’d agree. But I have yet to see G.I. Joe and I’m not going to past judgement before seeing the film (but it’s probably going to suck balls) and I’ve said in the past that Snake Eyes will probably be the coolest part of this molotov cocktail. Well Collider has posted some rather aight clips from the film. So we saw this sequence previewed in the Super Bowl trailer earlier this year and here is a little more of that set piece. Hmmm…. besides the K-Mart CGI, the concept seems cool but poorly executed. So does this make you wanna stay away or run towards the theater next week? Check out three other clips after the jump if you need more convincin’! Read more…

TONIGHT! 1968 downtown Fresno documentary to be screened

city-reborn-3

UPDATE: Tonight is the night for the screening! Come on out to Milano as we drink our sorrows away and enjoy a good film in these last days. NYUP!

When I saw my very first Playboy featuring Tasha Yar from Star Trek:TNG in the bathroom of a refrigeration repair shop in Dos Palos, I stood there stupified, mouth agape and all. That’s exactly the reaction I had when I saw the trailer for Fresno: A City Reborn and the shots of the Futon Mall open to traffic came up, as well as the shots of the place bustling with people. Wow. Anyways, catch all the info on the screening and the history of the film by heading over to the Fresno Beehive but just know that you need to mark Wednesday, August 12th on your calender because not only is the film going to be screened but a guided mall tour will be happening before the screening. Hope it ain’t ten hundred degrees that day. Guess I’ll have the Milano beer to cool be down afterwards, though. Nyup! Damn, I wonder if I can find those Tasha Yar pics anywhere online…

Zero Punctuation: Wii Sports Resort review

by brodiemashJul 29th, 2009Comments (4)

I’m not a huge fan of the Nintendo Wii. Oh sure, I can get my thrills with a 4 hour set of Boom Blox but I have yet to see the killer app that causes me to sell my good kidney to purchase the Nintendo soul-crushing, money printer that is this console. And I think Yahtzee feels the same way I do so you can imagine how much I’m going to love his review of Wii Sports Pt. 2. Please, don’t support Nintendo’s shenanigans by purchasing this game. Your only pushing Nintendo away from making cool games of yesteryear and supporting their unholy quest to surpass Microsoft as the most evil company EVAR.

C’mon, who really, really likes to read anymore?! Well 7-year old Dominic here seems to shun his Xbox and perfer the company of a good book. So what happens when said child gets banned from the library due to red tape and some snitch-ass good samaritan who decided to rat out little Dom? Fuck it! Break it down, Princess Leia!

‘Where The Wild Things Are’ featurette explores the author’s involvement

by brodiemashJul 27th, 2009Comment (1)

Word out of Comic-Con was that this film had some of the most impressive reactions from audiences when they screen a few minutes of the film. And if you’re like me and are counting down the days until this film open up in October, this might help you alleviate some of that hype. Apple has posted an exclusive featurette on the upcoming Where The Wild Things Are film directed by Spike Jonez and it delves into how the original author Maurice Sendak worked with the director in bringing his creation onto the big screen. Go on over here to check out the clip in HD and in case you wanted to catch the original trailer once again, here it is.
