This week’s Flashback Feature: The Matrix

by brodiemashJan 29th, 2009Comment (1)

url5I still remember reading about The Wachowski Brothers back in the days when their Assassins script was hacked up and turned into that fantabulous Richard Donner film. There was talk about this crazy, sci-fi film they had been working on called The Matrix. Didn’t hear another damn thing until I saw that first trailer which was overshadowed in 1999 by The Phantom Menace. Fucken aye! The look, the music (that piece of Enigma music first used by Renny Harlin’s The Long Kiss Goodnight worked fucken perfect) the action: yeah, I just knew this was gonna be bad-ass. And sure enough, it was true. Well, it’s been 10 years (holy shit, I’m old!) and tonight presents you with an opportunity to catch the classic film back on the big screen as it’s tonight’s Flashback Feature. The whole thing goes down at 9pm tonight at Edwards Theater and tickets are $5. Although no formal Dumb Drum Gettogether was planned, some of us will be out there so I hope to see you guys out there. [Insert corny Matrix related pun here]. Check out the classic trailer after the break! Read more…

Random Goodness: Electronic Newspapers Wave of the Future in ‘81

by brodiemashJan 29th, 2009Comment (1)

Hold on! 2 hours to get the entire newspaper at a charge of $5 an hour for access! Damn, that’s crazy. People in 1981 were ballin’ out of control! And if that guy selling those papers on the street hasn’t started worrying, he best to start pretty soon….the future is here! [via Videogum]

THE FIGHTING WALRUS!

New Final Fantasy XIII trailer shows actual gameplay

by brodiemashJan 29th, 2009Comment (1)

2010. That’s when Square is saying this game will finally be released. So that means at least 1 more year until I inevitably purchase this game and only get about an hour or two before I abandon it forever. That’s what I do with FF games as I have yet to beat any of them since FF7. Will this be the one to get me back on track? I doubt it, but it certainly will not be due to the ugly graphics. Man….this already looks epic! Let us know what you think!

R.I.P. The Designers Republic

by brodiemashJan 29th, 2009Leave a Comment

url4Earlier this week, I was informed about the death of one of the most influencial graphic design studios and one of my biggest influences (Thanks to Anitlabs for the heads up!). The Designers Republic might not be very well known around these parts but their designs have set trends and inspired many biters (myself included). For most, like myself, the first introduction to these digital artists came via the release of the classic 1995 PS One game Wipeout. The typography, the unorthodox aesthetics, the colors: the design bug had bitten me and I was blown away. The world is gonna a little less brighter knowing that these folks are no longer in business but there is a light at the end of the tunnel: founder Ian Anderson has stated that tDR will go on but he fails to state in what capacity. Well, in the mean time, check out some of their stuff after the break and I will be playing some Wipeout tonight for ol’ times sake. LONG LIVE THE REPUBLIC! Read more…

New G.I. Joe posers drop, sans faces

by brodiemashJan 29th, 2009Comments (6)

gijoe2Unlike the Transformers 2 poster that was revealed a few weeks ago, which was all face, these new G.I. Joe ones have a lot less of that nonsense. I guess the lack of big budget stars in the film can afford the studio to do something like that so all we get are a bunch of bodies looking all Matrix meets Batman & Robin. Well, the rumor is that we’ll be getting our first glimpse of the film this Super Bowl Sunday so you probably won’t have to wait too much longer to see the film in action. Check out the rest of them after the break! [via Aintitcoolnews] Read more…

Jeffersons. Some think they aren’t in circulation anymore. Some think they’re counterfeit money. Some think they’re rare collectibles. Others just think they’re odd. Well I say… FUCK THOSE STUPID PEOPLE, THEY’RE WRONG. $2 bills kick ass and we need to share their kickassedness with everyone else! Read more…

Dem Reviews: The Wrestler

by brodiemashJan 26th, 2009Comments (5)

MRWRERS15 4 MCNISHBack in the days, I used to love WWF. Ultimate Warrior was the man and a simple one at that. He never spoke as he focused on nothing else but kicking ass and taking names. Wrestling was my world for about 2 years but somewhere along the road, it lost it’s luster (I think when Ultimate Warrior disappeared and heard rumors that he was kicked out because the tried to rape Macho Man, that was when I stopped). Fast forward a few years and now I’m revisiting that world with Darren Aronofsky at the helm of this voyage called The Wrestler as he shines a whole new light on the life of a wrestler. Read more…

Did your movies-to-see checklist get a little bigger after the Academy Award nominations this week? Well you’re in luck, a number of these smaller films (I hesitate to call some true indies) are coming to Fresno multiplexes this weekend.

Ed Zwick’s Defiance, starring Daniel Craig and Liev Schreiber, up for Best Score (studio had hoped for more noms, but snubbed), is playing at Edwards and Manchester. Jonathan Demme’s Rachel Getting Married, starring Anne Hathaway who is nominated for Best Actress, is playing at Manchester. Also at Manchester, Stephen Daldry’s The Reader, starring Kate Winselt and Ralph Fiennes (Best Film, Writing, Directing, Cinematography, and Actress for Winselt). Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke nommed for Actor and Marrisa Tomei for Supporting Actress, is playing at Edwards. And also at Edwards, Sam Mendes’ Revolutionary Road, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winselt (nommed for Art Direction, Costumes, and Supporting Actor for Michael Shannon).

So what’re you planning on seeing? Let us know in the comments!
